Elderly Walkers Improve Your Life

By Kay William

If your ability for moving around your home without help is significantly decreased, due to your ages or some other health problem, or you have difficulties balancing, you might consider trying elderly walkers. They can really improve your life making you feel more secure and confident about yourself. You can choose among three different types of walkers. The most stable one is the standard type, the one without wheels. You need to lift it up and place in front of you to be able to walk around.

A two-wheel walker allows you to move faster. Thanks to its wheel pair of legs, it can be pushed around easily, while its legs without wheels still allow you to place your weight there safely, and prevent the possibility of rolling. For those people who need some help walking around safely, but they don't have any balancing troubles, a four wheel type might be the best solution.

All walkers should be equipped with anatomically shaped grips, in different sizes. They are usually made out of plastic, but they can also be made of foam or other, more soft materials. Those are suitable for people whose hands are more sensitive, due to different illnesses such as arthritis. Besides, if your hands sometimes get sweaty, soft grips will provide more stability.

Properly adjusted walker height is essential for comfortable use. While standing within it, with your hands placed on the grips, your elbows should be bent at the angle of 15 degrees. This way the stress on your shoulders and your back will be minimized. If it is too low, you will be forced to lean forward, and if it is too high, it won't be comfortable using it, and it won't provide enough stability.

Stay upright as you move. Push or move the walker in front of you, and then step into it, one leg at a time. Don't push it too far away from you and never try to use it to climb stairs. If you lean over it, it might cause you some back pains, so try to stay upright from the very beginning. Make sure to change directions slowly.

To improve your life additionally, you can attach different accessories on your walker. Attachable plastic tray can be useful for carrying your food to the table, and you could also attach a basket or a pouch on a side. Light seat can also be quite useful, if you enjoy walking around your neighborhood.

Rubber made shoe-stops and grips should be regularly checked and maintained, to prevent injuries. It is very important to check the state of your wheels as well. Loosed wheels can be very dangerous, and you need to stay perfectly safe when using this helpful piece of equipment.

Elderly walkers are usually made of very light, but durable materials. They provide precious freedom to their owners. Whether your problems are caused by your illness, or your age, you will surely appreciate the possibility of being able to move around freely, without fear of falling down. Being independent is very important to all people, and you should have a chance to become independent once again, you deserve it.
