Preparing for a Botox Treatment

By Craig W. Nevilt

It may have been a recommendation from a friend, or a trusted colleague that solidified your position. Or maybe you saw an attractive ad or article about the benefits of Botox. Whatever it was, got you to this point. Now, it's up to you to prepare yourself for you Botox appointment. The best way you can prepare for Botox is to inform yourself on what the procedure entails. They are not complicated or lengthy procedures, so understanding the mechanics and results of a procedure are pretty straightforward. Be sure to educate yourself. And try to clearly define what outcomes you would like and be able to communicate those to your doctor. This is the best way to insure your comfort and success.

Again, the actual day of the treatment is pretty normal. There is no anaesthesia to take and very little preparation required. When you are with your doctor, you will be asked to sit in a reclining, dentist-like chair. Knowing what you are trying to accomplish, the person administering your Botox treatment will likely ask you to contract specific muscles, then he or she will mark the injection locations.

Your Face After the Botox Treatment

As soon as the Botox injections are administered, you'll likely have some red dots showing in the area of treatment. In rare cases, some patients reported instances of minor bruising or swelling. If that were the case, the simple application of make-up would cover that up until the bruising disappeared. This would likely occur within a few hours of the Botox treatment. Since this is a non-surgical procedure, facial scars are not a concern. Doctors recommend using an ice bag on the injection site for a few minutes after the procedure. This should eliminate or reduce any inflammation.

After the injections have been completed, your doctor should provide you with Botox recovery instructions. The Botox will take effect within the first few hours with full results visible within about a week. So keep this in mind when you are scheduling your appointment around an event.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

BOTOX Cosmetic treatments are generally quite affordable, which is one of the main reasons for the procedure's international popularity. A BOTOX session will usually cost between $300 and $400 per syringe. Of course, this really depends on the specific treatment you'll receive. Compared to other anti-wrinkle injectable treatments, only collagen will typically cost less than BOTOX. To maintain results, BOTOX patients will have to pay somewhere in that general range every 4-6 months.

Are there Any Side Effects?

If Botox side effects occur, they're usually temporary, starting within the first week of injection, but sometimes persisting for several months. The kinds of side effects depend on what area you had treated with Botox. For patients with frown lines, the most common Botox related side effects include:

▪ headache

▪ respiratory infection

▪ flu-like symptoms
